HISTORY

According to the story, fire cement was first manufactured in Bristol in 1882. A businessman in Bristol was owed some money by a Greek sailor from the island of KOS. He saw that this debt would never be repaid and he took instead the formulation for fire cement. Prior to this people used fireclay for repairs to their fireplaces and hearths but this material is not suitable for this purpose.

Since these beginnings, fire cement and other refractory materials such as castables, mouldables and refractory cement / mortars have been manufactured in Bristol. These materials are exported to all countries of the world. It started with the Commonwealth, New Zealand and the Far East. These days the European trade has come more to the fore.

VITCAS

Vitcas is an independent company which follows this tradition and provides products of high quality. Our production is based on old, proven formulations that are being continuously modernised. Vitcas is formed of highly qualified specialists with a long experience in the refractory business. Vitcas manufactures fire cement, refractory cements / mortars and other heat resistant products in Bristol today. Vitcas has BSEN ISO 9001:2008 accreditation meaning that our products and services are of consistently good quality with an excellent reputation throughout various industries.

PRODUCTS

Vitcas manufacture a wide and comprehensive range of refractory and ancillary materials.

The SILCAS range are high silica air setting ready mixed mortars and adhesives for use with dense firebricks (chamotte bricks), insulating bricks and ceramic fibre.

The VITSET range are high alumina air setting refractory mortars for use with high alumina refractory bricks and shapes. The highest alumina cement/mortar in the family can also be ued successfully with basic refractories such as magnesite or mag - chrome bricks.

The PREMIUM range are Fire Cements available in buff or black colour for a wide range of uses either industrially or domestically. Fire Cement is used in the assembly of cast iron stoves, in fireplace repairs and boilers.

Refractory CASTABLES are the means to form monolithic linings in kilns and furnaces of all types and these are further sub-classified into conventional castables, low cement, low iron and insulating types for installation manually or by gunning. This range of refractory castables is based on a wide selection of raw materials such as chamotte, bauxite, andalusite, mullite, tabular alumina, corundum, silicon carbide and for insulation properties, perlite and vermiculite.

VITPLAST is the group of plastic mouldable refractories or ramming materials available as clay bonded or chemically bonded types. These materials are usually used where the lining must be made or repaired in situ such as the large doors on industrial boilers. This is especially true in the case of marine boilers worldwide. The foundry industry also makes considerable use of these materials for forming crucible linings.

ACIDCAS is an acid resistant cement for use in lining acid tanks and flues where otherwise acid attack on the cement is a problem. It finds particular use for lining sulphur pits in the petrochemical industry.

ZIRCON Refractory products are used in the glass industry because zircon has a particular resistance to the attack from the fluxes found in glass. Zircon Paint is used to coat refractories in the foundry industry because zircon also has a non-wetting property when in contact with molten metal thus avoiding the build up of slag.
